There’s a sickness going around and it’s been crazy. I’ve been under the weather…not quite sick but close to it. The past week when H was sick, he didn’t want to leave the house. The one and only time he went out when he was sick was when I drove him to Urgent Care. He felt really car sick during the short drive.Continue reading It is worth this many years of birthday and Christmas presents!
It’s been getting very cold over the last few days. We don’t have central heating, we have a gas heater that heats up the house okay and space heaters in the room. Oh, old house problems.Continue reading The Cat and Rabbit
Happy Weekend everyone! It’s been raining so hard this past week. The good out of it is that there are mushrooms growing in my front yard. Our front yard has very nutrient-poor soil that nothing grew. For years I’ve been rehabilitating the soil and have been slowly growing things. Mushrooms tell me that we have achieved healthy soil status. I just now have to remove the mushrooms so the dogs don’t accidentally eat them.Continue reading Unicorn, unicorn, unicorn!
If we were having coffee we’d probably be sharing — yes, sharing! — this cup of coffee. This is an $11 latte — the most expensive cup of coffee I’ve ever purchased. They recommended the mocha, but I’d imagine it would be even more expensive. The barista explained that they make their own chocolate or something like that. There were no prices posted on menu so I was price-shocked when I was about to pay at the counter. Was this latte worth the price tag? Unfortunately, no. But the coffee shop was beautiful.Continue reading Starting the New Year off with a vacation!
Last week I lamented how self-care is hard but I also did want to touch light on the small easy things that invigorated me over the past year. Again, I still don’t consider it self-care but I did not mean that they were too small to make a difference because they do feel good. So here are the “little things” that invigorated me:Continue reading The Little things
So far my 25 minutes per day of writing has been going well. I’ve been writing during my lunch breaks. Since we are about done for the term at work, I don’t find myself working through my lunch breaks playing catch-up.
Created another savings account
I started creating a savings account for charities and donations. I decided to do an auto-save where I set aside some money to help contribute to causes. This past week I bought some toys for my friend’s homeless project. She’s been doing this for years where she makes gift baskets of comfort items and hygiene products for the homeless. I would like contribute to other causes more often. Ideally I would like volunteer my time, but I think for now contributing through donations is within my bandwidth. Having some money set aside for charities and donations won’t catch me off-guard when a relative is asking me buy something from their kid’s fundraising catalog for marching band because I’ll always have something to give.Continue reading Self-Care is hard
How was your Thanksgiving? Ours was pretty simple. We just had it at my parents’ house. They live about 30 minutes away. I did not prepare anything fancy, I just got frozen appetizers from Trader Joe’s and I baked them when I got to my parents’ house. There were these fried goat cheese balls I wanted to make but I’ll try it another time. I don’t want my first attempt in fried cheese goat balls to be on Thanksgiving Day.Continue reading The Long Thanksgiving weekend
Call me crazy but I just finished hosting Friendsgiving and I just started working on my Weekend Coffee Share.
And yes, of course you are invited to the Friendsgiving Festivities. Do not worry, it’s not going to run late since most of us have work tomorrow morning. It’s a pretty simple setup of just friendly chatter and gossip. I apologize it’s not as elaborate in years before. I am little rusty on party hosting skills. I encouraged everyone to arrive after 3 pm because we had Lana’s dance class at 1pm. Afterwards, I had to pick up cake because it also happens to a friend’s birthday so we are making it a double celebration. Also I knew when I got home, I wanted to take a short nap before everyone arrived. I love the art of gathering, but I forget how tiring this season can be.
The next project I am excited to work on is decorating for Christmas. For years I keep talking about decorating the house but we never get around to it. I also enjoy going out to enjoy the decorations at the mall, the neighborhoods, events, etc. We still don’t have the space to decorate in the living area, but we could decorate outside at our entrance. If you decorate for Christmas (or any other holiday), how long does it take to decorate?
It’s been chilly all week long which means it’s starting to feel like fall in LA. In a previous post, I mentioned it was a little hard to adjust to the normal routine since coming back from vacation. I mean it’s been my first major vacation in more than two years. Plus it was my first vacation since having a baby and it was my first time being away from her for a week. I think around Wednesday was when I finally got the hang of my routine again (for the most part).Continue reading The Opposite of optimism is cynicism
I am back everyone! I promise I’ll post pictures in a future post and it won’t be posted six months after. In the meantime, grab some donuts from Austin. We got it from a place called The Salty. The star-shaped donut is the churro donut with a dulce de leche cream, the brown donut is a chocolate cake, and the white donut is a horchata donut. Honestly, I don’t think it tastes like horchata. It had a little cinnamon and the texture kind of reminded me of a tres leches cake which is also my favorite type of cake. We would also be snacking on some candied pecans. I picked up a bag from Buc-ee’s a popular large gas station/convenience store that also sells BBQ, merchandise, and home goods like a fire pit.Continue reading Catching an early morning flight
Now it’s my turn to go on vacation. Actually, the funny thing was that it was the other way around I planned a vacation first with my college friends and my husband decided to plan one with Lana around the same time. I realized I was going to miss out on seeing Lana experience her flight and her first long-distance trip. She will, however, experience the first time she’s been apart from me for more than 10 hours. Plus I will miss out on learning how to travel with a young child. At least my husband can tell me how it goes and we can plan better for the next trip (haha). I just learned we could pack the stroller which would have made getting around the airport so much easier. Plus it could have doubled as a wagon to hold our carryons and personal items.
I just landed in Austin and I am waiting for my friends to arrive. They’re coming from the Bay Area. In the meantime, I am at the seating area next to baggage claim writing this post to occupy my two hours.Continue reading Hanging out at baggage claim for two hours
Cutting it close with a couple of hours to go in Weekend Coffee Share.
This weekend has been busy we’re packing up for our trip for the following week. Initially, BIL was supposed to watch our dogs while we are out but this morning he said he isn’t able to watch them anymore because he’s going to visit his mom the following weekend. We thought what a weird reason to not take care of the dogs. Can’t he just take them along? MIL lives with SIL who has two dogs. *shakes my head* I don’t get it. We had to ask around to see who is able to take care of our dog. Thankfully one of our friends offered to care for them.
Building up my social calendar
On Saturday, we took Lana out for Trunk-or-Treating at a church. One of our friends invited us out to hang out. It was a lot of fun. And I would say this is Lana’s first trick-or-treat. Last year, we went to the mall and the stores gave out candy. I guess that kind of counts…but if anything we were at the mall for window shopping.
My friend told me that before coming to the Trunk-or-Treat event, she just came from the mall because Macy’s was giving out lego kits The following day, she was going to three Halloween community events. I said, “wow that’s five events in one weekend! You spend your weekends going to community events?!” She was telling me she finds out about the events through newsletters and Facebook groups.
For me, just thinking of her social calendar of it makes me tired. When I worked in senior living, I use to go to a lot of networking events and conferences. I was part of Toastmasters for my professional development. I work really hard in all these arenas and I made sure people recognized it. But then I stopped when I realized all the extra work I was doing was not getting me where I wanted to go. At the time I thought once I got to my destination (aka the promotion), I could finally pursue the “fun” stuff. COVID was a strange blessing for me. All these canceled in-person events allowed me to press the “reset” button on how I want to spend my time.
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy in-person gatherings. I just want to go for the ones that are meaningful like going to the gym for taking care of myself. Or going to my kid’s dance class because she enjoys dancing. Or joining a parent-child soccer meet-up to see if my kid is interested in learning soccer. Or join a foreign language meetup to practice my foreign language skills. Or volunteer to give back to the community. Or a book club to chat about a book…but most of all, I enjoy rest. I think in order to have optimal energy to do all these things I listed above I would have to give up sugar.
Gifting dog toys
This week I am gifting dog toys to a local dog rescue group.
What I am loving lately? The Finch app.
I like to describe it as a tamogotchi or a nanopet — remember those? It’s a digital pet on a tiny handheld device that you care for through feeding, playing, and bathing. You can even discipline the pet too. Finch is a similar concept but you care for your pet by fulfilling daily self-care goals such as making your bed, organizing a self, donating an item you no longer use, chew food slower, etc. I am surprised how easy it is to keep it up. I do not complete all the daily goals. When I am unable to complete a goal, I simply select “skip goal” and the goal appears on another day. There’s no negative reinforcement in skipping a goal. For now, I am using the free version.
